Project: Underwater – Caribbean Movement Festival

Project: Underwater – Caribbean Movement Festival

Beneath the surface, around the reef, the sea shelters a world in perpetual vibration, a symphony of invisible movements, of flows and breaths.
It is there, at the heart of life, in this space of correspondences between the body and the ocean, that Underwater takes root.

Imagined by the team of the Dispositif Récif – Karukera Ballet, this festival aims to connect choreographic creation and the preservation of the Caribbean’s natural heritage, in order to bring a new perspective to the choreographic creation of tomorrow, in connection with the territories and their inhabitants.

Conceived as an immersive dive into marine life, the festival creates a dialogue between choreographic creation, the territory, as well as scientific and ecological research, to become a laboratory where art, nature, and society mutually influence one another.

A FESTIVAL AT THE CROSSROADS OF WORLDS

Underwater – Caribbean Movement Festival is not just an event  it positions itself as an artistic ecosystem.
Developed around Jumping, a springboard for the emergence of Caribbean choreographic creation launched in 2023, it follows the same biannual rhythm.

At the heart of this pulsating core the springboard each edition seeks to invent new spaces for dialogue:

  • Performances and in-situ creations in direct contact with landscapes and local inhabitants
  • Encounters between artists, researchers, scientists, biologists, and thinkers of the living world
  • Civic actions and youth workshops, raising awareness about coral reef preservation
  • Artistic and social projects, open to all audiences
  • Moments of sharing, where art mingles with the conviviality of the region and fosters encounters.

Each edition of Underwater aims to weave an archipelago of experiences in connection with the public.

A dynamic born from the Jumping springboard

At the heart of the initiative, Jumping serves as the starting point of the festival.
Designed as a space for impetus and choreographic scouting, the springboard supports the emergence of artists of Caribbean origin.

The laureates of the springboard benefit from a structured two-year support program, in connection with a network of long-term partners, enabling the creation and dissemination of choreographic works.

Around this core, the festival unfolds a diverse program with committed participants.

VOYAGE BETWEEN IMPULSE AND IMMERSION

Alongside the springboard, Underwater invites and guides audiences to dive into dance as one dives into the sea  with desire, curiosity, and pleasure.
A plunge into the thought of movement as a way of relating to the world.

The artists welcomed during the festival whether from the Caribbean, mainland France, or diverse horizons invent new forms and contribute to the creation of a choreographic narrative. Dance then becomes an ecosystem, and each creation is like coral in the making: fragile, collective, yet above all alive.

The festival as a suspended moment

The festival seeks to be a suspended moment where dances, voices, ideas, and generations come together.

It invites us to rethink our relationship with the world, to explore the subtle connections that unite us with all living things, and to invent new forms of sustainable choreographic creation.

The ambition of Underwater Caribbean Movement Festival is clear: to create a space for encounters in the service of a Caribbean that is a fertile ground for choreography, and to become a recognized artistic and civic event both locally and internationally.
